Show Not Tell

Today for writing, we did not do collaborative so we instead had to do 5 'What Am I' from 5 different categories. We had to do this in groups of wither 2 or 3. I went with James and Savarnah. We all did different slides and contributed to it evenly. The answer is on the following slide after the clues. Comment down below how many you got right. Did you learn anything from the clues?

My Saturday

I had a pretty good weekend, I did some stuff but also had time to relax but I had a great Saturday.

This is what I did...

On Saturday morning, I went to Board Training at Corsair Bay which is flat water training on a Surf Life Saving Board. We trained for 1 1/2 hours on the flat, luke warm water.

Corsair Bay

The highlight of my Saturday afternoon was going to Library and issuing some books . Three of the books I issued was by one of my favourite authors Des Hunt. He is a kiwi author from Palmerston North and has won a few awards for some of his novels. Some of my favourites he has written are Search For A Kiwi Killer, Red Edge, To Trap A Thief and Deadly Feathers. Trust me, these are a must read!

Abandon Ship! Have You Read It?

Yesterday I finished reading the diary called Abandon Ship! It is by Shirley Corlett and is part of the My New Zealand Story series. I got it from the Christchurch City Library and read it as part of my School Wide Reading Awards. I started the book Tuesday night and finished Wednesday afternoon. It was a very entertaining and engaging book, let me tell you a little about it.

This is a diary of Debbie Atherton, a fictional character living in Wellington in 1968 aged 12 years old.
She starts reading her many greats grandfather's sea journal that her Gran gave her to read. Debbie finds it very fascinating and quite different to her own diary that is mainly about school and her friendship troubles. One day, sick in bed, Debbie thinks her long dead grandfather is trying to tell her something. Then she boards the Wahine.

I think this book is great for ages 11-14 as it tells a little bit of history and gives you a picture of what life was like in 1968. Do you think you will read it? What kind of books are you into?

Making A Recipe From Scratch

Next term I am going to be competing in a cooking competition online. For our school there will be around 3 - 4 teams competing. On the night we will be given 10 mystery ingredients and we have to use 8 of them, we will also ave the pantry essential (e.g. oil, butter, flour, sugar)

So on a Thursday lunchtimes we do some research for substitute ingredients that we could swap with core ingredients and on Friday afternoons we do some experimenting. Last Thursday we were given 6 tins (green peas, chickpeas, red kidney beans, corn, apple and beetroot) we had to find out what they could each replace as. On Friday we made a recipe substituting 80g of the tinned variety and with 60g flour, 60g eggs, 60g sugar and 60g fat (butter). The recipe had to total in 240g which meant there was a bit of maths behind it.

Luna and I paired up and decided to make Red Kidney Bean, Beetroot and Apple Muffins because there were so many groups we only made a very small batch each so that we could sample each others. I found ours were fluffy, sweet but not overly sweet, a little crunchy on top and had a pretty pink colour. I sampled another pairs which were Chickpea, Beetroot and Apple Muffins and theirs had the same attributes except were a little more sweet. I tried one lot that just tasted of a green pea and had not a cakey taste at all!

I have shared the recipe with you down below and converted some of the ingredients into cups as best I could. Do you think you would try our muffins?

Whakatauki

I quite like this whakatauki that I chose as a whakatauki to post on my blog for the Maori language week bingo board. It reminds of team work and how a person can only succeed with help from everyone else. I also drew the koru heart on google drawing to go with it.

Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori

This week is Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori which meant I did a quiz on words in Te Reo and a little slideshow of New Zealand cities in Te Reo and the Maori Atua (Gods). What are you doing to celebrate the week?

All About Orca

Yesterday, because it was our first day back from having 3 weeks in lockdown, we drew an Orca. We learnt how draw from a really good step by step tutorial by Anton, The Whale Man. In the video, he provided us with some great facts on Orca which was a great learning opportunity for us. I am not much of a drawing artist but I think my drawing could have looked worse, I just really struggled with drawing the tale or the professional word for it; the fluke. Have you drawn sea creatures before? What shape is their pupil?

21 Orca Facts

  1. Largest member of the dolphin family
  2. Known as Orca/Killer Whale
  3. Noticeable because of their black and white colour
  4. Male has a really tall dorsal fin
  5. Has a bulbous head
  6. The rostrum/nubbin is like their nose
  7. They has big sharp teeth
  8. Like eating stingrays
  9. Distinctive flipper is like a big paddle and it looks like a lemon
  10. The dot/tiny hole beside their eye is the ear
  11. Pupil is a c shape
  12. The blowhole is used like a nostril
  13. Tail called the fluke
  14. Black on the top, white on the bottom/tummy
  15. Lower jaw/anything below the mouth is white
  16. Their tummy pattern is the shape of a wave
  17. The saddle (often grey) identifies them and it is unique a bit like a fingerprint
  18. Scientists track the Orca's by identifying their saddle
  19. They have a white eye path beside their eye
  20. Super fast mammals
  21. The scientific name is Orcinus orca

The Classic, The Delicious, The Lemon Drizzle Cake

Yesterday afternoon I made a delicious lemon drizzle cake that was soft, fluffy, chewy on the top and had the perfect balance of lemon (sour) and sugar (sweetness).

The only error that occurred was that the cake was too hot when Mum lifted it out the pan which end in a little bit falling apart. We have made this cake before, in other times, the cake has gone flat or burnt by mistake, I think this could actually be one of the best I have made in years.

Here is the Donna Hay recipe that I followed.

The cake and icing uses around 2-21/2 lemons for the juice and rind so make sure you have enough! I also added only 1 cup of sugar rather than 1 3/4 as I thought that was way too much.

Which photo looks more appealing?

The Last Day Of Lockdown Work

Today we are in level 2, but schools do not open until tomorrow so we are still doing lockdown work today. I have done all my reading tasks and have now finished all my maths. I have finished the 8 lessons on problem solving which is good. I remembered to have a piece of paper to do my workings out on today which made it a whole lot easier. I hope you everyone (except Auckland) are enjoying the freedom of level 2.5. What are you doing this weekend?

Living On Ice (Comprehension)

This is one of my reading activities today. These are comprehension questions from the article Living On Ice that we have to read. There were extension activities that I did not do as I want to fit in some baking and reading today. Have you done anything interesting today?

Living On Ice

1. Give three reasons for Antarctica remaining uninhabited for so long.

Rough seas

Complete isolation

Nothing edible grows outdoors

2. Give one example of a way in which the Arctic and Antarctica are different.

There is a 34 degree celsius difference between the two temperatures beach Antarctica is -51 and the Artic is -17.

3. Give two general facts about the weather in Antarctica.

The cold dense air case katabatic winds which are constant winds that sweep the mountains and valleys at over 60mph/97kmph.

There is also another kind of windstorm called herbies that blow winds at 100mph/160kmph

4. Who is Emilio Marcos Palma and why is he famous?

He is the first ever person born in Antarctica, he was born in 1978 on a peninsula of the main continent of Antarctica.

5. What is the Antarctic Treaty?

A treaty that at the time 12 countries signed but since now 38 more countries have signed it.  It agrees to use Antarctica for a scientific and peaceful purposes only.

6. How have some of the research stations been adapted for use in this most unforgiving environment?

The South Pole station is build on hydraulic stilts so that the snow will blow under the station rather than over and around it. Even though this solution is a pretty good one, scientists still think that the station will have to be replaced by 2050.

7. Which survival skills are taught at the 'Happy Camper School?

How to survive in extreme weather conditions, how to keep hydrated, build an emergency shelter, and avoid natural dangers of Antarctica like crevasses.

8. Give two examples of the type of work you might do in Antarctica.

Medical staff and maintenance worker.

9. Name two ways in which the natural conditions of the continent might affect human beings.

The dark nights can cause sever depression or SAD

The high altitude causes altitude sickness.

10. What makes Antarctica so important to researchers?

The incredibly dark nights in winter make it great for observing the solar system.

Number Properties

For maths today, I got two 90% on Prototec which was pretty average but not appalling. In maths buddy, I worked on two assignments: Number Properties and Long Multiplication. I found the Number Properties quite interesting and a useful tool that I will try and remember, The Long Multiplication, I have already done but was not quite in zone so did not get 100%. Have you learnt about Number Properties?

The Food Celebrations Of Fathers Day

On Fathers day, Dad and I had some delicious homemade foods. In the morning Dad started off by making eggs Benedict (ciabatta toast, 2 poached eggs, holandaise sauce, sausages and potato tots/hash browns). It was so good, took a while to make very delicious.

For dinner, Dad and I made it together by making coconut cauliflower (the name that we came up with it is just cauliflower cheese without the cheese and using coconut milk instead of dairy milk), roast kumura and pumpkin, crumbed chicken and frozen mixed vegetables.

For dessert, as part of Dads Fathers day present, I made a chocolate cake with chocolate icing.

What did you do for Fathers day?

Breakfast
Dinner

Expanded Notation

Today I have really struggled to motivate myself to do anything! I could have easily curled up in bed all day and just ate food and read my book. But I thought better and have pushed myself to do the reading and maths tasks as well as go for a walk around the neighbourhood with my Dad and dog. What have you done today?

Today in maths buddy I was working on Multiples and Expanded Notation which sounds really big and difficult but is quite basic. For the Expanded Notation you just have add in the right amount of zeros. In prototec I got a 92% and a 90% which is pretty good for a Monday.

Living On Ice

Today for reading we had to read an article about living in Antarctica, then we had write down the definition for the words given to us in the article. I did this on google slides and added in the synonyms for the words too. Knowing the synonyms of a word usually helps me to have better understanding of the word I am unsure about.  The link to the article is underlined underneath the title on the front page.  Which word do you find most interesting? What could I do next time to make this slideshow more engaging to read? How do you best learn a new words meaning?

Technology at Home

As it is Friday, the seniors would usually be a Breens Intermediate doing technology (I am in Foods this term). Instead the Breens teachers have sent us some activities to do at home. I have done the Foods  and the Design activities.

For foods, we had to ask our family what their comfort foods are and then make a comfort food for the family to eat. I chose weetbix slice because it is sweet, contains chocolate and if I was feeling sad, the taste would probably make me feel better. What kind of food is your comfort food? Do you have any  healthy comfort foods?

For Design, I had to list 10 inventions that I see right now and choose out of 10 which one I would least want to live without. Next I watched a video that contains the 5 mos useless inventions that have been created and I had to say which one I think is the most useless and why. The final step was look at 5 pictures and right down what the purpose of the invention was and why it was a total and utter disaster! I have shared my opinion, what is yours? Which picture do you think is the most useless?

Fit For Purpose

WALT: Evaluate if an invention is fit for the intended purpose.

  • Highlight the 5 you feel are most important to you

The inventions that you have listed above are successful because they are fit for the

intended purpose i.e they do the job they were designed for.Not all inventions are this successful. Some inventions are just silly. Watch the video.

5 Weird inventions that nobody needed

My Dad

The daily challenge today was to get some old photos of your Dad and write in a blog post why he is so special to you. I have added in photos from when he was really (Thanks to my Gran), when I was young and around about now. Can you see how the quality of the photos have changed? Dad has an older brother so some of the photos are with him. There are heaps of photos of Dad throughout his life, these are just a small handful that I could find in a short space of time.

My Dad

He loves me and I love him, a lot. Dad is fit, healthy, kind, caring, helpful and is always there to support me when I play sport. He has coached me in surf life saving for many, many years now. No matter the sport, the activity, Dad always gives me his advice on how I can improve which I appreciate a lot. We share in common: swimming in a warm pool, swimming at the beach, Surf Life Saving, running, love of food, cooking, and winning (we are very competitive when we verse each other). Dad cooks some delicious meals and has introduced me to so many different types of food. He is always willing to go to a restaurant for a feed or body surfing at the beach (In Summer). Thank you Dad and Happy Fathers Day.

Facts On Japan

I made this Canva presentation about Facts On Japan because we had to do it for our daily Paralympic Task. I like using Canva because you can get the colours from the image to match in with the text and it makes it look more professional. I learnt that Mount Fuji is an active volcano and it last erupted in 1707, over 300 years ago. What did you learn from my presentation? Have you been to Japan?

Solving Problems by Solving The Simpler Problem First

Today for maths I did two 2 prototecs and a maths buddy assignment (I also did the test from yesterday). In maths buddy, I was working on Solving The Simpler Problem first. There were  couple of questions that I had absolutely no idea about, one was "How many pieces can you divide circle in using 5 straight lines", I do not quite get why that was part of the questions as to me it seems more like geometry. Do you know the answer?

Lamb Coucous

I made Spiced Lamb Couscous from the Nadia Lim cookbook for Mum as part of R.A.K.day.  I am unable to share the quantities of each ingredient as I could not find the recipe online and as we paid for the book, I think it would copyright if I shared the recipe without Nadia's permission. What did you have for dinner last night?

5 Spice Chicken And Rice

A couple of nights ago I made 5 Spice Chicken And Rice for dinner. I followed the recipe from a newspaper article. The recipe was quite basic as most of the cooking time was just leaving the rice to simmer away. The main flavour of the dish was Chinese 5 Spice. Have you heard of this spice before?

Not Clicking With The Brain

Today for maths, I have done 1 maths buddy assignment and 2 prototecs. The maths buddy assignment has been pretty tricky as I have not been working the maths problem solving questions out on a piece of paper and whenever I try to explain how I worked out the question, I get the question wrong! I have done the test like 4 times, hoping to get the questions I explained my strategy on. With the prototecs, I got 87% on one and 100%. Do you ever have those days, where maths (or another subject) just do not click with your brain? Well that is me today, so I am going to retry doing the test tomorrow to see if my brain will be able to get my head around it all.

Random Act Of Kindness Day

Today is RAK.day which stands for Random Act of Kindness Day. it has been happening in New Zealand for 16 years now we people do random acts of kindness. The seniors have now been encouraged to take part in this event in our bubbles. Down below are some ideas of what you can do and what I have done today for RAK.day plus a little song clip. What random act of kindness are you going to do today?

Using A Diagram And Making A List

Today I was answering problem solving questions on Maths Buddy using the strategy "Use A Diagram", the strategy is good one if you have a piece of paper near you (which I did not) as it involves drawing things and making Venn diagrams. I also worked out the questions using the Make A List strategy too.

I like using the strategy 'Create a table or organised list' is it means I can work in neatness. Which strategy is best for you when problem solving?

I also did 2 Prototecs where I got 97% and 95%. I am really benefiting from doing 2 Prototecs and 1-2 Maths Buddy assignments each day as it is refreshing my brain with lots of maths.

Past, Present And Future

I made this presentation on Canva. The Paralympic task was to research the last 2, the present and the next 2 Paralympics and Olympics and find out their logo and the venues. I found this quite interesting as I was only 7 when it was the 2016 games, so this time round has been the first time I have done a lot of research around the summer games. How old were you when it was the 2016 games? I also added in the mascot for the games too. For the following two games, it was hard to find their logo's as they have not quite made a decision yet on the logo's and mascot. My favourite logo was the 2012 London Paralympic logo as I like how it was a little bit different to all the others and had some pretty colours to it too. Which logo did you like the best?

Just Prototec

Today, I mainly focused on my reading tasks which were Read Theory, COB, Silent Reading and the Paralympic Task. So for the little bit of maths I completed, were the 2 Prototecs and the 1 1/2 maths buddy assignments as I did heaps of maths buddy on Friday afternoon. What do you do for maths in lockdown?

Scott Martlew

A task for reading that we have been given was to research a para athlete from Christchurch. We had 4 to choose from. I chose Scott Martlew. When I started researching him, I got a shock when realised that he does Surf Life Saving (like me) for the same club as me also (South Brighton).  He has competed at Nationals, I am going to Nationals next year. I have feeling that I have seen him on the IRB when at the beach as there is sometimes a person with 1 leg and balancing on crutches.  Do you know the other three Paralympians from Christchurch?

Scott Martlew

Born: 23rd September 1992

Age: 28 (It has not been his Birthday yet)

Para Sport: Para Canoe

Classification: KL2 C, VL3 C*

Residence: Christchurch, New Zealand

Age When Started Kayaking: 16

Highschool: Shirley Boy’s Highschool

Aspirations: Olympics

Hobbies: Water Sports and Rugby

Club: South Brighton

Year Of Injury: 2010

Scott started kayaking at the age of 16.

In May 2010 (aged 17) he was a top surf life saving canoe paddler whose team

had just won a silver and gold at Nationals for South Brighton (His Club).

In May 2010, when playing for Shirley Boys Highschool in a curtain fundraiser for

the Crusaders vs Brumbies match he took a hit to the leg while in a ruck. It started

as bruise but ended in a flesh eating disease necrotising fasciitis which meant he

had to have his left leg and hip amputated. He was in a coma for a month close to

death, as nearly 70 per cent of all people with that same disease die.

Siblings: 2 Brothers (Scott is a twin)

Disability: Single Limb Deficiency

How Many Paralympics: 2 (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020)

Coach: Leigh Barker

Ambitions: Become a Paralympian and compete at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

Paralympic Results: 2016 - 8th Men’s 200 KL3

10 months after getting his leg amputated (now 27) he joined his old team at the

surf lifesaving Nationals where they again won a gold and silver medal in the 4-

man canoe.

*= Classification their physical ability

Here is video of him I found in my research retelling what has happened in his life. In the video it shows him walking down to the beach of South Brighton. It is the part of the beach, that I have walked so many times in my life, heading down to the beach.

Healthy Fish n Chips

Last night for dinner I made a healthy version of Fish n Chips which in mine opinion is way better than the takeaway Fish n Chips. I made it mostly on my own, with a little it of Mum's help at times. What did you make for dinner last night in your bubble?

Biking Through Bottle Lake

It has been a bit wet and miserable here in Christchurch over the past few days. It went from really warm and sunny to a classic Winter's day. It was great conditions for going for a bike ride through the forest, that is if you wanted to get really muddy of course! There was nothing better to do, so that is what Mum and I did yesterday, went for a 12km bike ride through Bottle Lake Forest and got super muddy! The mud looked like rabbit poo as it sprayed up our backs as we tried to the avoid the puddles. It was quite cold at first but once the blood was pumping through our bodies, it was quite warm. Because it was such a miserable day, there were not many people in the forest and everyone you saw, you could tell, was local and not breaking the level 4 rules. Bottle Lake is a strange name for a forest. Why do you think it was named that?

The mud up by back and on my face.
At the 3/4 way mark.

There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom!

In the weekend I read the book There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom by Louis Sachar. It was a great book, easy to capture and follow along with and had a great ending. I could relate to each character with the decisions they each made. My favourite character was Carla Davis who just had such a cool calm and collected attitude, you need more Carla's in the world! Louis Sachar wrought Holes, have you read nay Louis Sachar books?

The book did not take me long to read (1 night and 1 day). I had just finished the 1st book in the Chronicles Of Narnia when I decided to read this. I am now reading the 2nd book in the Chronicles Of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe) which is set very differently to the There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom as it is set in War Time England rather than Modern America. Have you read or watched the movies of The Chronicles Of Narnia?

I have actually read There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom before but that was in Year 5 for Chapter Chat and I had completely forgot what the story was all about. Has anyone read this book before?

I am borrowing the book from the Christchurch City Libraries and have already logged the book in my reading tracker for the School Library Wide Reading Awards. Do you borrow books from the library?

Lots And Lots Of Maths Buddy!

Today it was teacher only day so technically there was no school but yesterday I decided that I would have a day off and catch up the following day due to beautiful sunshine weather. For about 1 1/2 I have been doing prototec and Maths Buddy but on top of that I have been explaining how I have been working out the questions from Maths Buddy on the slideshow so if I do forget in the future out to work out these problems, I can just come back to this and recap. In prototec today, I got a 90%, 97% (I knew the answers just did not write them down fast enough) and best of all a 100% which meant I got all 40 of the questions right.

Vegetable Chicken Curry

This is the meal, I made last night for dinner all on my own. The only part, I got help with was eating the curry and checking that it was edible and that we were no going to get food poisoning afterwards.

I have never made a curry all on my own before, I have only helped my parents make it by cutting up the vegetables or stirring the curry when it is simmering. The trickiest part was cooking chicken as I really wanted to make sure it was cooked and it is quite hard when the chicken is coated with the curry sauce. I am usually the pasta girl, but I am proud that I managed to branch out and cook something new. What do you think I could try next? What great would you have in lockdown on a Friday night?

Order Of Operation

Today for prototec I got 90% and 95%. In the 95% test I was very surprised as I thought I had got like 87% but when it came up as 95%, I was like "woah".

I have done maths buddy tasks that has been assigned to me. I am relearning Order Of Operations as it has been around a year since I learnt about this stuff.

How To Comment On A Blog

This blog post I created is for people who are a little unsure of how to comment on peoples blogs. The screencastify and slideshow (depending which one helps you best) talks through how to find the comments section and how to make a quality positive, thoughtful and helpful comment. What part of commenting do you find the trickiest?

Tupou Neiufi

It has been such a beautiful, sunny, warm morning here in Christchurch. I went on my daily class google meet, then went for a 5 km run, completed 2 Read Theory Assignments where I got 71% and 50%. I have also done some silent reading where I finished by book (The Cut Throat Cafe) so I now I am reading The Magicians Nephew which is the first book in the Chronicles Of Narnia. I have also commented on 2 peoples blogs and replied to a comment on this blog.

The final reading activity was to make a fact file on a New Zealand Paralympic Athlete. I chose Tupou Neiufi who is a Para Swimmer and has already competes at one Paralympics (2016) and will compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Have you heard of her?

Which One?

Today in maths, I did prototec where I got a 90% and a 95%! The test that I got 95% in, I got all the percentages to fractions right but not the LCM. In the 90% one, I got all he LCM right but not the percentages to fractions!

In maths buddy, I was doing the same but you had to work out the area with 3 numbers, so you first had to work out which 2 sides are the base and height and which one you can just ignore. If I was to multiply the 3 numbers that would be the volume of the shape but I was looking for the area.

One More Day...

One more day (for New Zealand) until the 2021 Paralympics begin! It's like the Olympics but even better because you can watch people who have 1 leg manage to bike in a faster time than you who has 2 legs, meaning 2 times the power. So we have been given a selection of activities based around the Paralympics. I chose to write a persuasion piece around the statement '“An Athlete should not be able to compete in the Paralympic and Olympic Games.” What is your opinion on this?

This morning I have also done 2 Read Theory assignments where I got 86% on the first one and 71% on the second. I also replied to 2 comments on this blog and commented on another persons blog from an Auckland School that we do Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu with. Before the daily google meet, I read for 20 minutes (I read the same book as yesterday: The Cut Throat Cafe).

“An Athlete should not be able to compete in the Paralympic and Olympic Games.”

I disagree.

Just imagine being great at something, but never knowing if you are truly the best at it.

That might be what the Paralympians feel when they are reflecting their winning gold

medal at the Paralympics.

Are they truly the best or is the Olympian with the two legs, no health condition, the best?

Having the Paralympics is a great idea for yes the disadvantaged, but surely the Gold

Medal Paralymians are allowed a chance to compete against the Gold Medal Olympians, it

would be like: The Best Of The Best.

It would be quite funny if the person with 1 leg could beat the person with 2 legs, right?

Maybe that is why they do not do it, they do not want to be humiliated!

I know they could just check each athletes time and compare it that way, but it is a very

different feeling; giving each other the deadly death stare, competing side on with your

opponent racing to the finish line. Why is that chance taken away from our Para Athletes

who have come so far and most likely gone through a time where they felt like nothing?
