Using A Diagram And Making A List

Today I was answering problem solving questions on Maths Buddy using the strategy "Use A Diagram", the strategy is good one if you have a piece of paper near you (which I did not) as it involves drawing things and making Venn diagrams. I also worked out the questions using the Make A List strategy too.

I like using the strategy 'Create a table or organised list' is it means I can work in neatness. Which strategy is best for you when problem solving?

I also did 2 Prototecs where I got 97% and 95%. I am really benefiting from doing 2 Prototecs and 1-2 Maths Buddy assignments each day as it is refreshing my brain with lots of maths.

Past, Present And Future

I made this presentation on Canva. The Paralympic task was to research the last 2, the present and the next 2 Paralympics and Olympics and find out their logo and the venues. I found this quite interesting as I was only 7 when it was the 2016 games, so this time round has been the first time I have done a lot of research around the summer games. How old were you when it was the 2016 games? I also added in the mascot for the games too. For the following two games, it was hard to find their logo's as they have not quite made a decision yet on the logo's and mascot. My favourite logo was the 2012 London Paralympic logo as I like how it was a little bit different to all the others and had some pretty colours to it too. Which logo did you like the best?

Just Prototec

Today, I mainly focused on my reading tasks which were Read Theory, COB, Silent Reading and the Paralympic Task. So for the little bit of maths I completed, were the 2 Prototecs and the 1 1/2 maths buddy assignments as I did heaps of maths buddy on Friday afternoon. What do you do for maths in lockdown?

Scott Martlew

A task for reading that we have been given was to research a para athlete from Christchurch. We had 4 to choose from. I chose Scott Martlew. When I started researching him, I got a shock when realised that he does Surf Life Saving (like me) for the same club as me also (South Brighton).  He has competed at Nationals, I am going to Nationals next year. I have feeling that I have seen him on the IRB when at the beach as there is sometimes a person with 1 leg and balancing on crutches.  Do you know the other three Paralympians from Christchurch?

Scott Martlew

Born: 23rd September 1992

Age: 28 (It has not been his Birthday yet)

Para Sport: Para Canoe

Classification: KL2 C, VL3 C*

Residence: Christchurch, New Zealand

Age When Started Kayaking: 16

Highschool: Shirley Boy’s Highschool

Aspirations: Olympics

Hobbies: Water Sports and Rugby

Club: South Brighton

Year Of Injury: 2010

Scott started kayaking at the age of 16.

In May 2010 (aged 17) he was a top surf life saving canoe paddler whose team

had just won a silver and gold at Nationals for South Brighton (His Club).

In May 2010, when playing for Shirley Boys Highschool in a curtain fundraiser for

the Crusaders vs Brumbies match he took a hit to the leg while in a ruck. It started

as bruise but ended in a flesh eating disease necrotising fasciitis which meant he

had to have his left leg and hip amputated. He was in a coma for a month close to

death, as nearly 70 per cent of all people with that same disease die.

Siblings: 2 Brothers (Scott is a twin)

Disability: Single Limb Deficiency

How Many Paralympics: 2 (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020)

Coach: Leigh Barker

Ambitions: Become a Paralympian and compete at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

Paralympic Results: 2016 - 8th Men’s 200 KL3

10 months after getting his leg amputated (now 27) he joined his old team at the

surf lifesaving Nationals where they again won a gold and silver medal in the 4-

man canoe.

Here is video of him I found in my research retelling what has happened in his life. In the video it shows him walking down to the beach of South Brighton. It is the part of the beach, that I have walked so many times in my life, heading down to the beach.

Healthy Fish n Chips

Last night for dinner I made a healthy version of Fish n Chips which in mine opinion is way better than the takeaway Fish n Chips. I made it mostly on my own, with a little it of Mum's help at times. What did you make for dinner last night in your bubble?

Biking Through Bottle Lake

It has been a bit wet and miserable here in Christchurch over the past few days. It went from really warm and sunny to a classic Winter's day. It was great conditions for going for a bike ride through the forest, that is if you wanted to get really muddy of course! There was nothing better to do, so that is what Mum and I did yesterday, went for a 12km bike ride through Bottle Lake Forest and got super muddy! The mud looked like rabbit poo as it sprayed up our backs as we tried to the avoid the puddles. It was quite cold at first but once the blood was pumping through our bodies, it was quite warm. Because it was such a miserable day, there were not many people in the forest and everyone you saw, you could tell, was local and not breaking the level 4 rules. Bottle Lake is a strange name for a forest. Why do you think it was named that?

The mud up by back and on my face.
At the 3/4 way mark.

There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom!

In the weekend I read the book There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom by Louis Sachar. It was a great book, easy to capture and follow along with and had a great ending. I could relate to each character with the decisions they each made. My favourite character was Carla Davis who just had such a cool calm and collected attitude, you need more Carla's in the world! Louis Sachar wrought Holes, have you read nay Louis Sachar books?

The book did not take me long to read (1 night and 1 day). I had just finished the 1st book in the Chronicles Of Narnia when I decided to read this. I am now reading the 2nd book in the Chronicles Of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe) which is set very differently to the There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom as it is set in War Time England rather than Modern America. Have you read or watched the movies of The Chronicles Of Narnia?

I have actually read There's A Boy In The Girls Bathroom before but that was in Year 5 for Chapter Chat and I had completely forgot what the story was all about. Has anyone read this book before?

I am borrowing the book from the Christchurch City Libraries and have already logged the book in my reading tracker for the School Library Wide Reading Awards. Do you borrow books from the library?

Lots And Lots Of Maths Buddy!

Today it was teacher only day so technically there was no school but yesterday I decided that I would have a day off and catch up the following day due to beautiful sunshine weather. For about 1 1/2 I have been doing prototec and Maths Buddy but on top of that I have been explaining how I have been working out the questions from Maths Buddy on the slideshow so if I do forget in the future out to work out these problems, I can just come back to this and recap. In prototec today, I got a 90%, 97% (I knew the answers just did not write them down fast enough) and best of all a 100% which meant I got all 40 of the questions right.

Vegetable Chicken Curry

This is the meal, I made last night for dinner all on my own. The only part, I got help with was eating the curry and checking that it was edible and that we were no going to get food poisoning afterwards.

I have never made a curry all on my own before, I have only helped my parents make it by cutting up the vegetables or stirring the curry when it is simmering. The trickiest part was cooking chicken as I really wanted to make sure it was cooked and it is quite hard when the chicken is coated with the curry sauce. I am usually the pasta girl, but I am proud that I managed to branch out and cook something new. What do you think I could try next? What great would you have in lockdown on a Friday night?

Order Of Operation

Today for prototec I got 90% and 95%. In the 95% test I was very surprised as I thought I had got like 87% but when it came up as 95%, I was like "woah".

I have done maths buddy tasks that has been assigned to me. I am relearning Order Of Operations as it has been around a year since I learnt about this stuff.

How To Comment On A Blog

This blog post I created is for people who are a little unsure of how to comment on peoples blogs. The screencastify and slideshow (depending which one helps you best) talks through how to find the comments section and how to make a quality positive, thoughtful and helpful comment. What part of commenting do you find the trickiest?

Tupou Neiufi

It has been such a beautiful, sunny, warm morning here in Christchurch. I went on my daily class google meet, then went for a 5 km run, completed 2 Read Theory Assignments where I got 71% and 50%. I have also done some silent reading where I finished by book (The Cut Throat Cafe) so I now I am reading The Magicians Nephew which is the first book in the Chronicles Of Narnia. I have also commented on 2 peoples blogs and replied to a comment on this blog.

The final reading activity was to make a fact file on a New Zealand Paralympic Athlete. I chose Tupou Neiufi who is a Para Swimmer and has already competes at one Paralympics (2016) and will compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Have you heard of her?

Which One?

Today in maths, I did prototec where I got a 90% and a 95%! The test that I got 95% in, I got all the percentages to fractions right but not the LCM. In the 90% one, I got all he LCM right but not the percentages to fractions!

In maths buddy, I was doing the same but you had to work out the area with 3 numbers, so you first had to work out which 2 sides are the base and height and which one you can just ignore. If I was to multiply the 3 numbers that would be the volume of the shape but I was looking for the area.

One More Day...

One more day (for New Zealand) until the 2021 Paralympics begin! It's like the Olympics but even better because you can watch people who have 1 leg manage to bike in a faster time than you who has 2 legs, meaning 2 times the power. So we have been given a selection of activities based around the Paralympics. I chose to write a persuasion piece around the statement '“An Athlete should not be able to compete in the Paralympic and Olympic Games.” What is your opinion on this?

This morning I have also done 2 Read Theory assignments where I got 86% on the first one and 71% on the second. I also replied to 2 comments on this blog and commented on another persons blog from an Auckland School that we do Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu with. Before the daily google meet, I read for 20 minutes (I read the same book as yesterday: The Cut Throat Cafe).

“An Athlete should not be able to compete in the Paralympic and Olympic Games.”

I disagree.

Just imagine being great at something, but never knowing if you are truly the best at it.

That might be what the Paralympians feel when they are reflecting their winning gold

medal at the Paralympics.

Are they truly the best or is the Olympian with the two legs, no health condition, the best?

Having the Paralympics is a great idea for yes the disadvantaged, but surely the Gold

Medal Paralymians are allowed a chance to compete against the Gold Medal Olympians, it

would be like: The Best Of The Best.

It would be quite funny if the person with 1 leg could beat the person with 2 legs, right?

Maybe that is why they do not do it, they do not want to be humiliated!

I know they could just check each athletes time and compare it that way, but it is a very

different feeling; giving each other the deadly death stare, competing side on with your

opponent racing to the finish line. Why is that chance taken away from our Para Athletes

who have come so far and most likely gone through a time where they felt like nothing?

Lumaconi Pasta

Before lockdown, Dad had bought some lumaconi pasta at the Riverside Market. So last night I decided to make Lumaconi Pasta Stuffed With Beef for dinner.  I found a recipe online, followed the recipe, added some vegetables to the recipe to make it healthier and then ate the pasta. It was quite simple indeed and for a like this one, did not take that long to make. What did you have for dinner last night?

Reading Activities For The Morning

After getting off the daily google meet with my class, I have been completing reading activities. I still need to do an activity from the Paralympic Task Board but I will do that on another post.

I have done 3 comments on blogs.

3 Read Theory Assignments.

#1 Book TitlePostal Service
Grade: 10
Result: 71%

#2 Book Title: Xandersol
Grade: 10
Result: 71%

#3 Book Title Voter Participation
Grade: 10
Result71%

I also have done 30 minutes of silent reading (I did that before going onto the meet).
The book that I am reading is from the Christchurch City Libraries (I am borrowing it). I only a couple more library books to go, so if this lockdown goes on for more than 2 weeks, I will need to start reading ebooks online!

The Cut Throat Cafe.
By Nicki Thornton
I read from page 144-174.

Maths Buddy & Prototec

Today for lockdown maths I did 2 Prototecs, in both attempts I got 97%! Only one away from getting 100%. I just need to work on converting percentages to fractions at a quicker pace.

I also did Maths Buddy where I was learning how to find the area of a triangle which is a very simple method once you watch the video on how to do it. When you have multiply/divide decimal points just add a zero to the decimal number to bring it back to a whole number. once you have worked out the question for how ever many zero's you added is how many places (from right to left ) you put the decimal point.

Maths Today

Today, I decided to do some maths. So I went onto maths buddy and did speed skills on level 4. I looked  at my results from last year and I am glad to say that I have improved in all areas except subtraction, I am using 'Have not done maths buddy in over a year' excuse for that one! Do you know tricks for me to do subtraction quicker?

Lockdown 2021

Back in Lockdown! New Zealand  have an outbreak of the delta variant of Covid 19 which means everyone is in level 4. Home School! Down below is a google slide that I will keep adding to of what I have been doing to decrease the boredom. My goals for this lockdown is to go out into the fresh air as much as possible, do a lot of reading and make sure I do not eat just because I am bored!

What are you doing to entertain yourself and your family?

Such A Busy Week - Book Week

Last week was book week. The theme was 'Time Travel'.

In book week we had...

  • Mystery Readers. Where year 7&8's go and read to a year 1-6 class (I read Kaha The Kea and a short biography of Sophie Pascoe from the Go Girl book to Room 12 and Room 17)
  • Book Fair. There was a scholastic book fair set up in the hall which had a variety of books that you could buy
  • Window Display. There was a competition running for the best window display. Our class based our creations from a book Hamish The Highland Cow which got us first place!
  • Guess The Teacher Behind The Book
  • Book Character/Era Dress Up Day. I dressed up at Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. To celebrate everyone's costumes there was a whole school parade.
  • Time Travel Writing.  Before book week my writing class wrote pieces of fiction writing based on each era (Dinosaurs, Cavemen, Victorians, Maori, Now and Future). Some were going to be read out at the parade but that never happened.
Here is my Time Travel Story.

A whirlwind of colours, shapes and people spin past me like an uncontrollable merry go round.
Bushes, evergreen trees and murky wetlands surround me.
Suddenly, deep rattling breaths, like thunder in a storm.
Confused, I peek around...
My lip trembles. Panic pulsates my body.
A Tyrannosaurus Rex!
My mind screams to make a dash for it, but my body lets me down.
Jagged yellow teeth sharper than any chainsaw on Earth.
Scales and veins. Feet as large as cars.
A grey, slimy, gooey substance lands on my shirt - snot.
The spinning motion begins.

I am in a cave, with painted pictures of stick figures in tribes.
Musky smells. Heat from a fire radiates my pale skin. Piles of straw layer the cave, showing signs of refuge. Hanging from the ceiling are dead fish, probably their dinner tonight.
I see an axe with blood splattered on the blade.
The place is giving me the heebie jeebies.
I leave, taking with me, a rose red apple.

A sound of warmth and comfort fills my ears, I try to decipher the words but realise it is in Te Reo.
I smile watching them, all happy. The leaders are wearing feather cloaks.
I see a speck in the distance, as small as a pebble. I realise what it is. A bird. Advancing closer towards us. With wings 3 metres long. Flying double the speed. I crouch for cover. But the villagers don’t.
The Haast’s eagle has mistaken people as prey. Now they have no leaders.
How brutal.

Two horses trot along the cobblestone path, pulling a carriage with wheels larger than the horse itself.
A lady, wearing a puffy dress. Her lord, wearing a long jacket and a high top that is taller than his own head.
Posh accents. Poor families begging. Lamp posts plastered with Wanted posters.
An unwanted vibe fills the air.
I turn to go.

Fluro road cones are now an essential accessory lining concrete roads, potholes and cracked footpaths.
The 500 year flood rainwater from a couple of weeks ago is still situated in the Red Zone.
The summer sun heating the breezy air.
For every four cars, there is one speeding over the limit. One distracted by their phone. One barely keeping their stressed eyes open.
The deafening noise of machines cutting down harmless trees reaches my ear drums. A notice, explaining their purpose.
To build a retirement village.
Why?

Once the spinning motion stops. I realise, I am in the same place.
Now the puddles are larger. Deeper than before. The retirement village now resting on stilts built of metal frames hovering above the ground.
Aircrafts carrying people dart round like unwanted flies.
The humidity is high with everyone wearing sleeveless shirts.
Unlike before, no dogs are being walked. Just robots flying around tending to jobs the humans do not want to complete.
‘Lazy’ I mutter.

I open my eyes, the now is peaceful. The past is indescribable.

This is me.

Weetbix Slice

This morning we made Chelsea Sugars Weetbix Slice as a class. We split into 4 groups with 5 in each group. The slice had 7 ingredients so we each had a turn to measure an ingredient and stir the mixture. In each group we doubled the original recipe to ensure we get 2 slices each, altogether we made 10 batches!

This is the order we did to make this delicious slice:

  1. Melting the 300 grams butter in the microwave. Then crushing the 8 weetbix and stirring it in with the melted butter.
  2. Then combining the 2 cups flour, 1 cup white sugar, 2 Tbsp cocoa powder, 2 tsp baking powder and 2 drops of vanilla essence.
  3. Because it was not quite coming together we added some more melted butter to the mixture.
  4. Then we tipped the mixture out on a lined (baking paper) tray and quashed it together with a spoon and mug as we did not have a rolling pin. To bond the mixture together and cook the flour and baking powder we put them all in the oven for 10 minutes.
  5. Miss McCombie then quickly made some chocolate icing with cocoa powder, icing sugar and hot water.

Everyone is super excited to try a piece at lunch time once the icing is set! I have never made weetbix slice or even tried it before. Have you?

M.A.C. Cooking Badge #1

In Maths, for an extension activity we are doing maths badges. To get a maths badge you have to select a category and then do 6 activities from that category. I chose cooking tech and this one of the challenges; To plan a 3-course meal , develop a menu, predict the cooking/prep time, determine the buying list and cost of each item. I used google drawing for the menu. Google Docs for the shopping list. Then used the online pak'n'save site to find the cost of each item. The underlined titles have links to the recipes. Have you ever cooked/baked something from one of Nadia Lim or Chelsea Sugar's recipes?
